What's MEDLINE?
"MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) premier bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences.
MEDLINE contains bibliographic citations (e.g., authors, title, and journal reference) and author abstracts from over 3,900 biomedical journals published in the United States and 70 foreign countries during the current four years... MEDLINE [includes] over 9 million records dating back to 1966."
This site features the Health Information Resource Database, a searchable database providing access to "1,100 organizations and government offices that provide health information upon request.
Entries include contact information, short abstracts, and information about publications and services the organizations provide."
"CHID is a database produced by health-related agencies of the Federal Government.
This database provides titles, abstracts, and availability information for health information and health education resources.
The value of this database is that it lists a wealth of health promotion and education materials and program descriptions that are not indexed elsewhere."
The main disadvantage of CHID is that only 18 topics (such as Diabetes, Cancer Patient Education and Weight Control) are featured.
Nevertheless, if your problem is one of the featured topics, this is an excellent resource.
The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy (Sixteenth Edition, 1992) is available in a searchable format on the Merck web page.
While portions of this text are outdated (the new addition is due in 1999), it can, nevertheless, provide the reader with useful background knowledge.
How do librarians research a medical question?
This site, which is primarily intended for librarians, provides a wealth of useful information on the title topic.
This is an EXCELLENT starting point for a rigorous investigation of any medical topic.
